How to Calculate Plastering Material Requirements

Wall area and coat thickness, converted to a mortar volume

Area times thickness

Plastering volume follows the same logic as a thin slab: surface area (wall or ceiling) times the plaster coat's thickness, converted to a consistent unit before multiplying. Plaster thickness is typically measured in millimetres or fractions of an inch, since coats are much thinner than a concrete slab.

Multiple coats

Plastering is often done in more than one coat — a base/scratch coat and a finish coat, for instance — each with its own thickness. Calculate each coat's volume separately using its own thickness, then add them together for the total material volume.

Surface texture and waste

A rough or uneven substrate (like a block wall) absorbs more plaster to achieve a flat finish than a smooth substrate, and hand-application always carries some material loss. A waste allowance is standard practice here, similar to concrete, though the appropriate percentage depends on the substrate and applicator's technique.

Worked Example

A 300 ft² wall area, single 12mm (about 0.47 in) coat.

Depth in feet: 0.47 ÷ 12 ≈ 0.039 ft

Volume: 300 × 0.039 ≈ 11.8 ft³

Cubic yards: 11.8 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.44 yd³
