What it is
BuildFactor is a working instrument for the field and the estimating desk — not a marketing site with a calculator bolted on.
The homepage exists to get you into a calculator. The calculator page is where the work happens: your numbers in, an exact quantity and an order quantity out, and the formula, assumptions and sources right there if you want to check them.
Why it exists
Most construction calculators online do one of two things: they hide the formula and hand you a single number, or they bury a real tool under ads and filler. Neither helps when you're ordering material and the number needs to be right.
BuildFactor takes the opposite position. Every result is explained. The exact quantity and the quantity you should actually order are kept separate so you can see the allowance. Anything we can't source, we don't publish. The goal is a tool a professional can rely on and a homeowner can understand.

How the calculators work
Four rules apply to every calculator in the library.
Formulas come from sources, never guesses
A calculator ships only when its formula is traced to an authoritative reference — an industry standard, a code section, a manufacturer's data sheet — and its output is checked against a documented worked example. Every calculator page lists its formula, its assumptions and its sources. A formula or a constant (a material density, an industry pack size, a price) that can't be cited that way doesn't go in — nothing is shipped with math we can't stand behind.
Exact and recommended are two separate numbers
The exact result is the pure geometry of your inputs. The recommended result adds a waste / overage allowance so you don't come up short. The two are always shown as distinct values with the percentage visible between them — waste is never folded in silently, the allowance is always editable, and the exact figure never disappears or gets rounded up to match.
Imperial and metric, everywhere
Every calculator works in both systems. The global toggle converts every value on screen in place and never clears your inputs. Conversions use exact NIST SP 811 factors and are covered by tests.
Built for the way construction work actually happens
One data-driven engine renders every calculator, so the interface is identical from tool to tool — inputs on the left, results on the right, the formula and worked example one tap away. Once a calculator has loaded it keeps working with no signal: the engine and its definition are cached, and favorites, recently used and saved calculations are stored on your device.
Formula & source transparency
On every live calculator page you'll find the formula written out, a worked example with real numbers, the assumptions it makes, and a list of sources with links where they exist. Cost calculators take the price as your input — BuildFactor never embeds a “current market rate,” because it changes by region, supplier and week.
Each calculator also carries a version. When a formula or a constant is corrected, saved calculations made with the older version can be flagged as out of date rather than silently changing under you.
