Siding Calculators
Exterior cladding is estimated in squares — 100 square feet — the same unit as roofing. The Siding Calculator turns a building's wall perimeter, height and gable areas into a net siding area and, for lap siding, the lineal feet by exposure (the visible height of each course after the one above laps over it). The Vinyl Siding Calculator adds a take-off of the accessory pieces that are easy to under-order: starter strip along every wall base, J-channel around every opening and up the gable rakes, and a corner post at each corner. Only openings larger than about 10 square feet are worth deducting; smaller ones are covered by the waste allowance. House wrap, trim, soffit, fascia and fasteners are separate line items.

For each gable, it's half the gable width times the gable rise. The Roof Pitch Calculator gives the rise from the width and the roof pitch. Add all the gable triangles together for the one input.
The height of each course that stays visible after the next course laps over it — 8-inch bevel siding is usually installed at a 7-inch exposure. A square of it is more lineal feet than the board's face width suggests, which is why the calculator asks for it.
Yes. Starter strip, J-channel, corner posts and utility trim are all separate items from the siding panels or boards. The Vinyl Siding Calculator sizes the main ones so they don't get forgotten.
