Squares = Roof surface area (ft²) ÷ 100
Bundles = Squares × bundles per square

Squares = 2,400 ÷ 100 = 24
Bundles = 24 × 3 = 72 exact
With 10%: order 80 bundles (≈ 26.4 squares)
- Roof surface area is the actual sloped area — not the building footprint.
- Standard asphalt shingles at 3 bundles/square unless you change it for your product.
- The waste allowance covers starter and hip/ridge — order dedicated starter strip and ridge cap separately if your manufacturer requires them.
- Underlayment, drip edge, flashing, nails and vents are not included.
- How many bundles in a square?
- Three, for standard 3-tab and most architectural asphalt shingles. Some premium/designer shingles are packaged 4 or even 5 to the square — the wrapper states it.
- Do I still need separate starter and ridge cap?
- Usually yes. This calculator's waste allowance covers the material used for them if you cut them from field shingles, but many manufacturers require purpose-made starter strip and hip/ridge caps for the warranty — buy those in addition.

1 roofing square = 100 ft² of roof surface. Universal roofing-trade convention (NRCA).
Bundles per square
3 bundles per square for standard 3-tab and most architectural asphalt shingles. Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) / manufacturer packaging. Some heavy/designer shingles are 4–5 — adjust for your product.
Waste allowance
≈ 10% typical waste for a simple gable (cuts, starter, ridge); 12–15% for hips/valleys. NRCA / contractor practice. Editable.
