Formula, calculation, assumptions and sources

Bulk density = (Cutter + soil mass − empty cutter mass) ÷ Cutter volume

Dry density = Bulk density ÷ (1 + moisture content as a fraction)

Percent compaction = Field dry density ÷ Laboratory maximum dry density × 100

Run the calculation to see each step with your own numbers.

About the In-Situ Dry Density Calculator

The In-Situ Dry Density Calculator turns a drive-cylinder (core cutter) field sample into bulk density, dry density, and percent compaction against the target laboratory maximum dry density (from a Proctor test) — the standard compaction-control check for fill, subgrade and pavement layers. It follows the ASTM D2937 drive-cylinder method's arithmetic, the North American equivalent of the core-cutter technique.

What you enter

  • Cutter/cylinder volume, V
  • Empty cutter mass
  • Cutter + soil mass
  • Moisture content (from a companion sample) — Use the Soil Moisture Content Calculator on a sample taken alongside the cutter. 0 is a valid (oven-dry) reading.
  • Laboratory maximum dry density (Proctor)

What you get back

  • Field bulk (wet) density — kg/m³
  • Field dry density — kg/m³
  • Percent compaction — % of the laboratory maximum dry density.

The formula, a worked example, the assumptions behind it and the sources are shown in full below the calculator.
