Formula, calculation, assumptions and sources

Area basis: units = area ÷ coverage per unit

Volume basis: units = volume ÷ yield per unit

Cost = units (rounded up, with waste) × price per unit

About the Construction Material Calculator

The Construction Material Calculator is a general-purpose divider: give it an area and a coverage-per-unit rate, or a volume and a yield-per-unit rate, and it returns the number of units — bags, boxes, rolls, sheets — plus an optional cost. It holds no material data of its own; you supply the rate from the product packaging. If BuildFactor has a dedicated calculator for your material, use that instead, because it carries the right density and waste defaults.

What you enter

  • Estimate by
  • Area to cover
  • Coverage per unit (area basis) — e.g. ft² per bag / box / roll / sheet.
  • Volume to fill
  • Yield per unit (volume basis) — e.g. ft³ per bag. 0.6 ft³ for an 80-lb concrete bag.
  • Price per unit (optional) — Your quoted price — BuildFactor never fills in a market price.
  • Waste allowance — Default 10%. Adjust to your own allowance — the exact figure is always shown too.

What you get back

  • Units needed — shown as the exact figure and, separately, a recommended figure with your waste allowance added.
  • Estimated cost — 0 unless you enter a unit price. Exact = whole units for the exact quantity; recommended = whole units including waste.

The formula, a worked example, the assumptions behind it and the sources are shown in full below the calculator.
