Limestone in Construction: Common Uses
A versatile crushed stone product used far beyond decorative landscaping
As a base and surface material
Crushed limestone is widely used as a driveway and road base material, similar to other crushed-stone base products, because it compacts well and is often locally abundant and cost-effective in regions with limestone quarries nearby.
Drainage and erosion control
Larger limestone rock is commonly used for drainage applications and erosion control (riprap) along slopes, ditches and waterways, where its size and weight help resist being washed away by moving water.
Decorative and general landscaping
Smaller, often lighter-colored crushed limestone is a popular decorative groundcover in landscaping, valued for its appearance and relatively low cost compared to some other decorative stone options.
As a raw material for cement
Beyond its use as a crushed aggregate, limestone is also a key raw material in the manufacturing of Portland cement itself, where it's processed at high temperatures with other materials to produce clinker — the core ingredient ground into cement powder. This is a separate, industrial-scale use distinct from limestone sold as a landscaping or base aggregate.
